Having trouble finding the
meat in your religious burger? We have reduced God to sound
bites and marketing slogans. The influence of God in our day
to day life is relegated to a small compartment along with the other
multitude of sound bites. We pull out the God DVD
occasionally when we need to act holy. Of course there are
many versions and translations available today but the most common is
the reduced cartoon version with Wendy, Casper and Buzz
Lightyear.
Here's the video plot: Wendy the good little witch who (of
course) goes around waving her wand fixing people's
boo-boo's. Casper the friendly little holy ghost
flits around helping Wendy. Meanwhile Buzz Lightyear is in
the background bumbling along trying to rescue Woody and the rest of us
from the mess that he made to start with. There is (of
course) little chance that Wendy and Casper will be able help you
because they are so very busy. A good idea is to throw a
party and invite them and maybe they’ll come because they like doing
their magic at parties. Buzz never comes to parties because
he's not a fun guy and he's busy saving Woody anyway. So
there. Another theology has been born.
Or, there is the God that wants to be so involved and intertwined in
your life that He knows how many of your skin cells washed down the
shower drain this morning. He also wants to be so much a part
of your life that every breath and heart-beat is for Him and because of
Him. He is the God that never, ever departs from
you. You couldn't peel him off no matter how hard you
tried. You know: The God of Psalms 139. Try Him,
you'll like Him. With Him you’ll never need to ask: "Where's
the beef?"

goodly pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went
and sold all that he had, and bought it." Mat 13:45-46
